Survivor Story Submission

Welcome to the Death in Cambodia, Life in America Survivor Story Submission. In season 3, Robert and I have decided to recreate the healing experience of storytelling and interviewing and share it with the rest of the world. There are so many other stories, like Robert's, that will be left untold if we don't try to capture them now. Many of you are also here because your parents have never shared with you the full survival story, and maybe Robert and I can help create that vulnerable space for them to feel comfortable sharing. Other survivors are more likely to open up with the help of a fellow Khmer Rouge survivor, and to someone who speaks their language, like Robert. We want to show them that after 50 years of traumatic suffering, it's ok to let go.

All stories will be posted on the Death in Cambodia Podcast as episodes. They will also be filmed in documentary style, and shared via YouTube and Social Media. Audio files and videos will then be sent to you for your keepsake.

Please fill out the submission form below if you would like to be considered for this program. As we are set in the Bay Area, we will start with local submissions first and work our way out to further cities. Please answer all questions fully. Our greatest concern is not to re-traumatize Khmer Rouge survivors. Please make sure your parents are aware of the interview happening, and they are willing and ready to talk.

After submitting, we will reach out within 2 weeks to schedule a zoom meeting to discuss next steps.

Have you asked your parents about the khmer rouge before? Mom? Dad? Both?

What have you heard from them? What are some of the key points of their story? Please explain.

Why do you want us to come out and capture your parents' story?

Do your parents know about the DIC podcast?

How well do your parents speak english? Do they need Robert's Khmer translation?

Have you asked your parents if they want to be interviewed?

If so, what was their response?

How do they feel about being interviewed? Is there anything that would make them more comfortable in this process? We are trusting your judgement and are willing to make accommodations.

To allow the survivor to feel most comfortable, interviews will most likely be conducted in the survivors home, and by Robert and I. This will also allow the survivor to show any keepsakes from the Khmer Rouge, or any valuable artifacts they would like to share. Is the survivor ok with this?

All video and marketing expenses will be covered by the Death in Cambodia Team, however we do have a limited budget on travel expenses especially for cities outside of the West Coast. If you live outside of the West Coast, would you be able to financially contribute? If so, approximately how much are you able to contribute to our travel expenses? (NOTE: We will try our best to cover as much as we can, and will only request the contribution if necessary. We have to fly out the videographer as well and unfortunately things can get pricey).
